School streets consultationDue to the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic and the council’s proactive approach to the safety of the wider Windsor and Maidenhead community, it was decided not to deliver hardcopy leaflets related to this engagement. Whist in usual circumstances information leaflets and potentially hardcopy surveys would be hand-delivered to the consultation areas, it was felt that under the current lockdown restrictions this could cause unnecessary risk to both the distributors and recipients of these leaflets. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing measures, we have seen a significant reduction in capacity on public transport across the country in a bid to help slow the spread of the virus. With the capacity reduction, it is anticipated that many trips to school need to be made by other means of transport on the road network daily. Given the distances involved in these journeys, the most likely alternative travel options for many people are going to be walking and cycling. Car use will also inevitably increase but we are hoping to implement new interventions to support you to walk or cycle instead. We would like to introduce several School Streets schemes throughout the borough to improve air quality and to create a safer, more pleasant environment for children, parents, teachers and the wider community. A School Streets scheme is where a road with a school temporarily closes to become a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school’s drop-off and pick-up times. By temporarily closing roads outside schools, this cuts the threat of motor traffic and pollution at the school gates making it safer for children to get to and from school. For further information, please see our FAQ section. We would like to hear your thoughts on the proposed implementation of these School Street schemes at the following schools.
