School Council

The school council is an elected body.

Each September at the beginning of the new school year, the children in each class from Y1 to Y6 vote for two representatives, usually a boy and a girl, to serve on the council for the whole academic year. The school council consists of 24 members in September. During term 4 we are joined by one representative from each reception class so we then become 26.

In July the school representatives are thanked and their duty is done. They are replaced with a completely new set of children in the next year. The teacher overseeing the school council is Mrs. Elinor Clark who works as a teacher of the deaf in the Hearing Resource.

The school council members represent their class and meet regularly to discuss school issues. Every year the representatives are conscientious and very willing to give up their lunch time to attend meetings. Part of their remit is to gather ideas from their peers on the topics for discussion and bring them to meetings and then report back.

In the past the school council has surveyed the staff, parents and children asking their opinion of the availability and variety of the after school clubs on offer. This survey led to an increase in the number and choice of these clubs. They also were very involved in creating the Wessex Primary Playground Charter and in helping to decide on the new school uniform.

The school council has won community awards for our participation in the ‘adopt a street’ campaign.

Every year we raise over £1 000 for charity. The school council is involved in deciding fun ways to do this. We enjoy arranging ‘Wessex has Talent’, which has become a much anticipated annual event in school, the proceeds of which go to a charity or towards the School Arts Centre.

The school councilors enjoy the responsibility of their role and do their duty well.

Mr. Woodbridge and the rest of the school would like to thank the previously selected pupils, who have done a tremendous job representing Wessex and the new positions will be displayed very soon.
