Religious Education (RE)
At Wessex Primary School, religious education gives children the chance to explore a variety of religions and worldwide beliefs as well as sharing their own experiences and ideas.
We begin in Early Years and KS1 by asking ‘What is religion?’ and over the children’s journey to Year Six, ask open-ended and challenging questions which explore meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.
We want pupils to:
- Describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices
- Recognise the diversity which exists within our school community, wider community and within the UK
- Develop a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold different beliefs from their own and living in a society of diverse religions
- Develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues
- Enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
Religious education contributes to our children’s personal development and to community cohesion by promoting mutual respect and tolerance in a diverse society.
In accordance with section 71(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children wholly or partly from:
- Receiving religious education given in the school in accordance with the school's basic curriculum
- Attendance at religious worship in the school
If you wish to withdrawn your child wholly or partly from religious education, please contact the school to discuss this in the first instance.
